HERE IS THE CURRENT 8000 METRE PEAK DEBATE
MANASLU : Very inexpensive. Superb preparation for Everest. World's easiest 8000 and 8th highest peak, climbed in September on good safe fixed ropes. Try with oxygen or without. Mostly a snow climb with a few crevasses and small steep snow section just above camp 1. A good solid slightly steep snow headwall just below camp 4. Summit day is an easy hike, with a tiny snow pyramid at the summit. Great views of Annapurnas from the summit! A lovely quick trek in. Leader Dan Mazur has climbed it 3 times, with strong Sherpas. Option to ski or board.
Gasherbrum 2 (+1). Very inexpensive. Easiest 8000er in Karakoram. World's 13th highest. Climbed in June-July-August. Super friendly local people and an amazing trek through K2 national park. Glacier travel section above basecamp. Steep snow on summit day, but not technical. Oxygen available on request. Possible to climb it together with Gasherbrum 1. Leader Dan Mazur summited with strong Sherpas.
Everest from Nepal. The most popular (South) side of Everest. Climbed in April and May. Beautiful trek to basecamp through lovely Sherpa Villages. Warmer and less windy and less expensive than the Tibet side. More crowded than Tibet, with the infamous Khumbu icefall just above basecamp. Summit day crosses the renowned Hillary Step. Leader Dan Mazur has organised and led 12 succesful expeditions to Everest, with very good Sherpas.
Everest from Exotic Tibet. The rarely visited (North) side of Everest. Climbed in April and May. Drive from Kathmandu to basecamp, then walk with Yaks for 2 days to Advanced Base Camp (ABC). Best views of Everest (better than Nepal). Colder and more windy and more expensive than the Nepal (South) side. Much less crowded than Nepal, with very little crevasse danger. Summit day crosses the famous 1st 2nd and 3rd Steps. Leader Dan Mazur has organized and led 6 successful expeditions to the summit, with very good Sherpas.
Lhotse from Nepal. Everest's sister peak, climbed from the same route as Everest, then branching off to a different high camp at the top of the Yellow Band. Easier and less expensive than Everest. Leader Dan Mazur has organized and led 3 successful expeditions to the summit, with very good Sherpas.
K2, Worlds 2nd Highest Peak. Climbed in June-July-August. Honoured among mountaineers, K2 is steep with a variety of weather patterns, snow and wind. During the last few years, K2 has been fixed with rope by expedition teams working together. The technical steep sections on K2 are many, but rarely vertical for more than a few metres in height. Very friendly locals with an amazing trek to basecamp. Leader Dan Mazur has organized and led 3 successful expeditions to the summit, with very powerful Sherpas.
Cho Oyu in Tibet. More expensive. World's most accessible 8000er and 6th highest peak. Climbed in April or September. Drive to basecamp, drive to interim camp, walk a few hours to ABC. Two small technical sections, one ice step above Camp 1 and one rock step on summit day. Excellent views of Everest from the summit. Leader Dan Mazur has climbed it 5 times, with strong Sherpas. Ski and Snowboard it in September.
Broad Peak. Very inexpensive. Easier 8000er in Karakoram. World's 12th highest. Climbed in June-July-August. Super friendly local people and an amazing trek through Karkaoram national park. One small rock section on summit day. Possible to climb it together with K2. Leader Dan Mazur has climbed it twice, with strong Sherpas.
